Who are we and what do we do?
Nationally these days, Development has evolved into something called Advancement, a catchphrase that perhaps covers the many ways in which we, as development professionals, try to impact the well being of Miami Union Academy. Our goal in the Development Office is to do just that – advance Miami Union Academy: through better communications (both internal and external), through fundraising, and through better relationships between parents, alumni, and the School.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of the activities that happen outside of the classroom. Parents who volunteer through the Annual Fund provide critical operating dollars for the spectacular education our children receive every day. Those who give their time to our various parents’ associations and clubs truly care for our Miami Union Academy community and also generate hundreds of thousands of dollars for our School every year. There is a vibrant atmosphere at PC that comes from a committed community of parents who work with us to help make their kids’ school a better place every day.
Our job and our joy in the Development Office are to help these volunteers do their job. Did you know it’s cool to be an Annual Fund volunteer? Right now, we are also working on gearing up for the Capital Campaign – our new buildings are really going to be something!
Communications are part of our job as well. The PAW e-newsletter comes out every week. We plan to publish the Jaguar Magazine every year to keep our alumni population current on happenings in and around the greater Miami Union Academy family.
Finally, we’re into relationships! We work closely with parents, alumni, past parents, faculty, constituent churches and friends of Miami Union Academy. We are planning to establish the Volunteer Leaders’ Council, a group of parent volunteer leaders which get together once a month to discuss issues with Mrs. Harris. We coordinate Grandparents’ Day, donor recognition events, help with auctions and other special events. We’re responsible for maintaining a good relationship with our North Miami neighbors and we’re also very conscious of spending our resources wisely – so we try to be as green as possible which is why most of the communications you get from us will be electronic.
